History of Mahindra
Mahindra & Mahindra was established as a steel trading company on October 2, 1945, in Ludhiana as Mahindra & Muhammed by brothers Harikrishnan and Jayakrishnan and Jagdish Chandra Mahindra onward with Malik Ghulam Muhammad. Anand Mahindra, the existing Chairman of Mahindra Group, is the grandson of Jagdish Chandra Mahindra. Later India gained independence and Pakistan was established, Muhammad migrated to Pakistan. Muhammad obtained Pakistani citizenship and settled in Lahore, and during 1948 became Pakistan's first finance minister. Consequently, the company modified its name to Mahindra & Mahindra in 1948. It ultimately saw a business opportunity in extending into manufacturing and selling more general MUVs, starting among the assembly below license of the Willys Jeep in India. Forthwith built as the Jeep manufacturers of India, the company following commenced manufacturing light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and agricultural tractors.

M&M procured a 55% stake in the REVA Electric Car Company during 2010 and renamed it to Mahindra Electric while 2016 following taking 100% ownership. South Korea's SsangYong Motor Company was obtained in 2011. During 2010–11 M&M entered micro drip irrigation among the takeover of EPC Industries Ltd in Nashik.
During October 2014, Mahindra and Mahindra obtained a 51% controlling stake in Peugeot Motorcycles and obtained a 100% controlling stake during October 2019. During December 2015, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd and associate Tech Mahindra Ltd, for a special purpose vehicle (SPV), have agreed to acquire a 76.06% stake in Italian car designer Pininfarina SpA, for €25.3 million.
During January 2017, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd obtained a 75.1 equity stake in Hisarlar Makina Sanayi ve Ticaret Anonym Şirketi, a farm equipment company, marking its entry within Turkey and during September 2017 obtained another Turkish tractor and foundry business Erkunt Traktor Sanayii AS for ₹800 crores.
During April 2020, the company closed its joint venture among Renault, including Mahindra & Mahindra acquiring out Renault's stake. Renault remains to license and supply key elements such as engines and transmissions to Mahindra & Mahindra.
