Diesel  is an Italian retail clothing company, located in Breganze, Italy. It sells denim, and other clothing, footwear, and accessories. The clothing line has two different brands: Diesel and Diesel Black Gold.Diesel is known for its diverse clothing collections for men, women, and children of all ages. Its style, in particular, is known for taking elements from rock-and-roll for its collections of chic yet casual denim wear that have built the brand a reputation for embracing provocative clothing styles.The idea of Renzo Rosso was to make creative and washed-out jeans and to break conventions. He wanted its brand to embody a rebellious esprit. He had to face a first problem: nobody could see the link between Diesel name and fashion. In 1982, he asked his team a logo inspired by Apache, Redskins, Cherokee and other Indian names which were a hit among jeans shops at the time. The logo of Diesel will be a punk-rock Mohican with the slogan “Only the Brave”. This logo enables the brand to have a strong personality, to have rebellious image and it can be more easily recognizable for customers.


Diesel History:

Diesel story began with the passion of a man for fashion. Indeed, Renzo Rosso was disappointed about the options available in his hometown in Italy and wanted to improve the  clothes market.

In 1978: Renzo Rosso put his love for fashion into practice and joined Moltex, an Italian manufacturing outfit (owned by Adriano Goldschmied). He borrowed money from his father to buy a 40% holding in the company and changed its name to Diesel.In 1979, he had created his first full menswear collection with the Diesel name and expanded sales internationally in 1981.

1984: Diesel Kids,a new line launched.

1985: Diesel brand created, Rosso bought out $500,000.

1989: Diesel launched a female line.

1991: Diesel launched its “For Successful Living” advertising campaign.

1994: Diesel targets teen by launching the collection 55DSL.

1995:, the first fashion company to launch a website.

1996: Rosso chose the US market to open its first store and did it in New York City. Renzo Rosso deliberately picked a spot directly opposite Levi’s on Lexington Avenue. “I wanted to show how beautiful our product was, in front of them,” says Rosso.

1998: Rosso targets upper class and young professional men by launching an upscale product line of Diesel called “StyleLab”.

2008: Rosso launched a new, premium line extension called Diesel Black Gold (rock chic collection).

Nowadays, Diesel is present in over 80 countries with 10,000 points of sale and almost 50 company-owned stores. Its turnover was 1,5 billion Euro in 2012.


Brand name:

The brand name Diesel was chosen because ‘diesel’ was considered to be the ‘alternative fuel’ in the current oil crisis. It means Diesel brand may become an alternative on the jeans market. Furthermore, it is pronounced the same in every language.
